Andúril Fan
designer and
seamstress:
Rachel Murphy

Andúril
Fan is a one-off,
original Irish dance solo dress by Silverlode Needlecraft.
It
is the second dress in the "Fan" series.
Andúril
Fan was originally
inspired by Tolkien's Lord of the Rings and Aragorn's
sword Andúril, meaning "Flame of the West", but
beyond the sword-and-flame image, the design evolved into a
fan design reminiscent of the Dragon Fan dress from
the summer of 2007, and took on more colors than originally
intended. With a flaming cranberry-orange metallic silk
base--with a gold shine--to the cranberry sleeves with gold
net, the whole is comprised of various sunset colors. The
appliqué consists of lamés, brocades, and other fabrics in
metallic shades of golds, silver, reds, coppers, among
others. The embroidery--including the Elvish script--is
freehand machine work in metallic and rayon threads of the
same colors, with the addition of black. The lycra of the
bloomers and skirt lining is a shining red-gold flame
design. The dress is accented with over 500+ Swarovski
crystals in shades of: Sun, Hyacinth, Light Siam (Red),
Fire Opal (Red-Yellow), and Citrine.
The Elvish script around the skirt is as follows:
Nányë Andúril, i macil Elendilo
"I am Andúril, sword of Elendil"
The dress was completed in January
2008.
