Irish Dance Dresses > Previously Sold Works > 2004 > "Blood of the Irish Martyrs"

designer / seamstress
Rachel Murphy

The design includes a combination of traditional Celtic knotwork (triskels, Trinity knots) with abstract geometric designs; including, on the bodice, an abstract Celtic cross in mosaic applique. Examples of the symbolism include: the crown of thorns and the flames (sacrifice); white-gold lilies (purity);red roses (love and martyrdom); stars (glory).

The base fabric is dark red metallic silk with glittery red netting behind appliqué. Appliqués are lamé, glitterdot, and other metallic fabrics in shades of gold/red/copper. Skirt lining and matching bloomers are dark gold liquid lamé, and the pleats are dark gold glitterdot. All embroidery is freehand machine satin-stitching in metallic threads. The dress is accented with Swarovski genuine Austrian crystals in colors of citrine (yellow) and fire opal (red).
