River Silverlode"

designer and
seamstress
Rachel Murphy
The River
Silverlode is a new, one-off original design, whose flowing knotwork and
art-deco spirals try to capture something of the flowing of waters. The simple
boldness of the shimmery 2-color scheme is designed to be striking on stage.
The primary base
fabric is an icy blue metallic silk with a silver shine, contrasted by a darker,
glittery sea-blue netting behind much of the appliqué. The appliqué consists of
various metallic fabrics (glitterdot, lamés, brocades, etc.) all in shades of
blue and silver. The embroidery, including the script, is freehand machine work
in metallic shades of blue and silver. The skirt lining and bloomers are made
of a dark royal blue liquid lamé, and the pleats—front and back—are a pale blue
mini-glitterdot. The dress is accented with Swarovski crystals in the colors of
Capri Blue and Crystal. There are lots of crystals on this dress!

The design of The
River Silverlode was inspired by the icy river that runs though the Elven
wood of Lothlorien in Tolkien’s Middle Earth. The Elvish script (a Sindarin
poem attempt by the seamstress…though she is no Elvish scholar!) runs roughly as
follows:
|
Celebrant, heled kheleko!
Úminnathon hin nenath ring,
Celeb-lhun, din,
Sirith
ereb, gwaerin,
Nef
elenath. |
Silverlode,
glass of ice!
I will not
enter these chill waters,
Silver-blue,
silent,
Flowing
lonely, windlike,
On this side
of all the stars. |
